As a content creator from the cosplay subculture, I have faced my fair shares of odd looks and questionings. COSPLAY (コスプレ) is a fast-growing worldwide phenomenon which originated in Japan. It is a portmanteau of the words costume and play. The practice involves transforming into a fictional character through costuming and make-up. It has evolved into a performing art that often calls for the creator to learn multiple professions—make-up artist, patternmaker, tailor, 3D model maker, concept artist, and etc. A few cosplayers have even managed to make it a full-time career. Despite the fact, it is largely looked down upon and misunderstood by the general public.
SubStories, the first edition, showcases the works of 6 creators (3 photographers and 3 cosplayers) as well as a short excerpt on why they do what they do.
To educate and promote embracing difference. The people actively participating in subcultures and defying the norm should be able to tell their stories without judgement. Therefore, the editorial piece I was tasked with producing transformed into a tool for others to speak of their past, ambitions, fears, and passion. Even if this magazine fails to achieve its goal of spreading awareness, I believe it can still give those featured a sense of pride in doing what they love.
